GO SAINTS!!
At FMES / SFA we strive to provide an athletics program that exemplifies the school mission:

“Provide students the tools to acquire individual fulfillment, …moral and spiritual development, confidence and independence for lifelong learning. Students learn to care for and respect themselves, others and the earth.”

FMES / SFA athletics exist to provide opportunities for youth to participate in activities under conditions that are safe, enjoyable, and promote positive attitudes of fair play and cooperation. Like Dr. Montessori, FMES is about development of the whole child. Athletics can play a key role in a child’s mental, physical, emotional and spiritual development.

As in the Montessori classroom, we want the child to have a safe environment to explore various sports during their years at FMES. We spend time choosing the best leagues for our participation. We make efforts to offer a variety of sports throughout the school year and to form teams at the various grade levels. We rely on the talents of our staff and parents who volunteer their time and talents throughout the year as coaches and assistant coaches.

In addition to the physical benefits, athletics have a plethora of learning opportunities. There are the rules and technical aspects of each sport. There are also opportunities for social growth with self-discipline, individual goal setting and team building. Sports like swimming, cross country and track have both individual and team components.
We offer two levels of athletic sport participation: Team / Interscholastic Sports & Instructional Sports

Team / Interscholastic Sports
We have associated with the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) for the purpose of interscholastic league competition. All eligible youth are given the opportunity to participate with no “try-outs” or “cuts”. Every effort will be made to create as many teams as there are interested participants. Once a season starts, every student who has attended practices should play in every game. Participation, involvement and being able to play are far more important than winning a particular game or having the best win-loss record. Developing the individual is the focus; the game is merely the tool. There are currently opportunities for team competition in volleyball, basketball, swimming, and track.
  Instructional Sports
Soccer, cross country, basketball, track and tee-ball are currently offered at an instructional level. It is the goal of our instructional sport program that each child shall have a positive introduction to each particular sport and the opportunity to experience individual accomplishment, teamwork and the value of sportsmanship. Competition is secondary to participation, mastering technique and rules. This program is designed so that each child might enjoy several years of participation. This should provide each child the time and freedom to master the various components of a sport, regardless of ability or desire to be involved with interscholastic competition in the future.
