UPPER ELEMENTARY Complex & Abstract Grades 4 through 6 The Upper Elementary level leads to greater abstraction - more writing, dialogue, and skill in the process of exploration. Students naturally want to learn about language and humanities because it is an area they are learning and developing for themselves in their own social interaction. Communication is a strong social need at this level, as is the enthusiasm to understand more about the immediate and broader worlds of which they are a part. A unique expression of "science" is the Earth Experience program - a key curricular Montessori approach that fulfills the work begun in the classroom. No one says it better than Dr. Montessori, "There is no description, no image in any book that is capable of replacing the sight of real trees and all the life to be found around them, in a real forest. Something emanates from those trees which speaks to the soul, something no book, no museum is capable of giving." While the Earth Experience can be viewed simply as an outdoor education venture, the Montessori student is called to an awareness of his place in the world and his duties to steward life around him. In the Upper Elementary division there are 75 students in the three multi-aged classes. In addition to the integrated curriculum, these students have many opportunities beyond the classroom for Special Programs and after school activities.
