Saint Francis Academy (SFA) strives to provide an environment which allows adolescents to function independently, exploring in a safe way many aspects of adult life: commerce, industry, finance, interpersonal relationships, and natural consequences. Mixed ages allow for growth among the students, promoting leadership skills in older students while allowing the younger ones to benefit from the emotional growth of their older peers. This experience models community and the interdependence so necessary to learn to function as responsible citizens of the world.
SFA is a real-life laboratory for learning. Academics can be demonstrably linked with experiential activities. Learning about flood plains can be better shown by a visiting geologist in the field. The full spectrum student-operated lunch program introduces business and management concepts and hones culinary skills. Literature is best experienced by Shakespeare in the Round or poetry readings in the woods. Other hands-on educational opportunities include the annual Communication Workshop, Aboriginal Experience, Business Discovery, Erdkinder, and an Ashland campout.
SFA guides understand that at this formative time in a student's life, self-esteem is not a quality of character that a school can give; rather they create an environment for the students to develop it from within. Its growth is a process that requires the guides to give time, show patience, and provide experiences that encourage, challenge and test a student's mettle. A deep and lasting sense of one's own competence and worth is the most powerful protective factor in coping with the difficulties of daily life.
The intimate, personalized programs of SFA's offer a ratio of one teacher to ten students. A number of Special Programs and after school activities are also available.
